Our Researcher Armin Shayeghi Appointed Research Associate at Harvard University

We are proud to announce that our researcher, Armin Shayeghi, who is a Senior Postdoc in the group of Markus Aspelmeyer at IQOQI Vienna, has been appointed as a Research Associate in the Department of Physics at Harvard University, in collaboration with Cumrun Vafa, Chair of the Department and Hollis Professor of Mathematicks and Natural Philosophy.

Armin is currently leading an experiment that lays the groundwork for future research aimed at answering one of the most fundamental questions in physics: What does the gravitational field of a quantum particle look like? This new experiment aims to push the boundaries of our understanding of gravity by testing it at previously unexplored scales. The ultimate goal of the Aspelmeyer group is to explore gravitational phenomena in a regime where gravity must be described by quantum physics. This includes scenarios where gravitational sources exist in quantum superposition, a critical step toward realizing a quantum version of the famous Cavendish experiment. Measuring gravity at ultra-small scales will also be sensitive to potential deviations from the Newtonian inverse-square law, possibly providing insights into new physics beyond the Standard Model.

Armin’s dual affiliation with IQOQI Vienna and Harvard University allows him to bridge experimental advances with broader theoretical frameworks, such as investigating modifications to gravity at small scales. The collaboration strengthens both institutions’ commitment to advancing our understanding of fundamental physics and promises to open exciting new avenues in gravitational research.
