A Causal Reinterpretation of Classical Mechanics

We usually think that classical mechanics paints a clear picture of how one collection of events deterministically evolves into another.

I want to turn that picture on its head, and reinterpret classical mechanics as the story of how events emerge from a more fundamental causal structure. This sheds light on the relationship between classical mechanics and its quantum successor, which Jon Barrett and I have already reformulated along similar lines. Further afield, it is hoped that developing the concepts or primitive causal structure and emergent events will help us to better tackle the challenge of quantum gravity.
