On historical analysis of non-empirical physics

In face of ongoing difficulties to find experimental support for research programs related to quantum gravity, one remains with non-empirical methodologies for theory advancement.

In my talk, I would like to present historical examples in which non-empirical methodologies have already been employed in the past and provide an analysis how this became historically possible in these cases and how, in turn, these cases might have influenced contemporary non-empirical situations.
