Hypergraph states are multipartite entangled states that are a generalization of the well-established notion of graph states. Mathematically, they can conveniently be described by a hypergraph that indicates a possible generation procedure of these states; alternatively, they can also be phrased in terms of a non-local stabilizer formalism. After a brief review of basic concepts such as the graph state formalism, we will show the main entanglement and nonclassical properties of multiqubit hypergraph states. For systems of higher dimensions (qudits), we will present interesting connections with modular arithmetic and the the different perspectives associated to the so-called qudit hypergraph states.
