Adaptive optics to enhance OAM entanglement transmission in turbulence

Orbital angular momentum (OAM) of light holds great promise for quantum key distribution protocols either by increasing the number of channels or by allowing for high-dimensional encoding schemes. However, OAM modes are strongly distorted by atmospheric turbulence.

I present theoretical results showing that adaptive optics, widely known from astronomy, can restore the distorted photons and by that help exploit the full potential of OAM. For a wide turbulence range, the entanglement measured by concurrence and the final state’s trace can be regained while the quantum bit error rate associated with mode crosstalk can be pushed below the security threshold.
